Pool Heaters

While it might not seem necessary to keep a pool in the Sarasota, Florida area heated, to enjoy a swimming pool year round requires a pool heater. A pool offers the benefits of a place to exercise, entertain, enjoy family, etc. Why not heat it so you can enjoy it year round?

There are three types of pool heating systems you can turn to—solar, electric and gas. Let's look at what each system has to offer.

Solar Pool Heaters

The greatest advantage of a solar pool heater is the fact that installing it is the biggest expense. After that, you start to experience the financial benefits. They allow you to harvest the heat of the sun, so even though the system isn't free, the sun that fuels it won't cost you anything.

The solar collecting panels can be set up on the roof of your home as long as they face the correct direction to capture the sun's rays. Otherwise, the collection panels may need to be installed on a sturdy utility shed or on a free-standing structure with the correct orientation.

Solar pool heaters are usually capable of maintaining pool temperatures in the low to mid 80s.They use your existing pool circulating pump, so the cost isn't any greater than if you keep the circulating pump going as recommended by most pool companies. Set the pump to run only during sunlight hours.

Electric Heat Pump Pool Heaters

Not every home is able to support a solar heater. The roof may be too small, or the property's layout is not in a sun-oriented position. An electric heat pump pool heater is then a logical consideration for keeping your pool comfortable. As long as the outside temperature is above 45°F, keeping the pool between 80 - 90°F is attainable.

Heat pumps actually utilize the heat from the air, upgrade it with a compressor, then transfer the heat to the water in the pool. The warmer the air, the more efficiently the heat pump heats the pool. The typical life expectancy of an electric heat pump pool heater is 10 – 15 years.

Gas Pool Heaters

When you only use the pool on rare occasions, a gas pool heater may be worth considering. This is the most effective way to heat a pool as the pool is warmed rapidly. But it is also the most expensive way to heat your pool.

Many pool owners like to have a gas pool heater as a back-up to one of the other systems. For example, a spell of cool weather may render an electric heat pump pool heater ineffective. Cloudy weather can reduce the effectiveness of the solar pool heater. A gas heater is a way to guarantee that your pool is usable at any time.

Relative Costs of Various Pool Heaters

Gas pool heaters come in a wide range of prices, but generally are the least expensive. Solar pool heaters come in next, with heat pump pool heaters tending to be the most expensive. The size of the pool determines what size of pool heater is needed. This then determines the cost of the pool heater and its installation.
